I think a nod to Behind the Mask : the Rise of Leslie Vernon would have been nice. It has a fake final girl, a surprise final girl and a probably ex final girl now dating “her” killer, and it reflects a lot on the relationship between the killers and their final girls.
No mention of “Don’t Breathe” ?
All this analysis stuff is really just complicating the main factor: it’s easier for the audience to feel fear and suspense in a horror film if the protagonist is female as opposed to male. Women, in general, get scared more easily and have a harder time fighting back, so the stakes feel a lot higher with them as the lead. This makes it possible for these character to be well written and feel real.
When the main character in a horror film is male, it’s usually played with more humor and with far less realism. Ash anyone?

yeah this physically doesn’t make sense. women are obviously the weaker sex. in real life it sure as hell wouldn’t be some dumb bitch to save the day. this trope needs to end on grounds of absolute fantasy

a few movies like scream 3 covered the final girl’s PTSD and years of therapy.
Cabin in the woods was better than I thought it would be 🙂
