The salem stuff happened because their crops were invaded by a fungus that caused the seizures and shit, i guess plenty of other cases were similars with hallucinations and poisoning

Many of those trials where prompted by envy or feuds among neighbors, convenience, paranoia… if someone was slightly different or suffered from a still unknown sickness: WITCH!! a pretty young woman wouldn’t consent to some rich gentleman’s courtship, he’d call: WITCH!!! Worst of all was, many of the accused ended up “confessing” after the barbarous torture methods they were subjected to. Denying would only extend the torture!
